Reflection...

Creating 1% was a journey...

From the beginning of this project to the end I have extremely developed my production skills and learned how to create, produce, and distribute the film. Starting from creating the storyboard all the way to finding the specific element we could include as easter eggs, the beginning process developed my imagination and creativity to think outside of the book to make the film opening as realistic as possible. This came from the misc-en-scene elements such as the color blue representing sex-trafficking awareness, the National Human Trafficking awareness day being placed at the beginning of the opening, the pictures in the film representing the diversity of the victims, and the white clothing representing the innocence of the victims. When it came to location scouting and preparation I gained knowledge on the extensive research and preparation that goes into the film before the actual production. While filming I began understanding the time-extensive process of having every shot be perfect and the constant refilming when something does not come out as planned. I learned how to direct and place the image in my mind on the big screen. I entered a whole new world when it came to editing and learned how to produce different elements and edits such as the camcorder effects and the battery percentage. I never knew how time-extensive these processes are and how much behind the scenes work needs to be produced in order for the final film opening to be created.
Throughout this process, I have learned the ups and downs of working with others and the time it takes to create true art. I'm so glad that I was able to produce this work with a team that worked collaboratively and efficiently. 1% has taught me the behind the scenes work of creating a film and developing an idea into an actual project. Creativity was essential and I'm extremely glad that this project gave us the opportunity to expand our minds and learn so much about this process. There is no better feeling than watching the responses you wanted when showing someone your film opening. I'm extremely satisfied with the final project and hope that whoever sees it will be impacted by the true purpose of the film opening being created, which is to create awareness about sex-trafficking.

Preparation time!

We're at the final stretch of the project, finishing our final details for props and costumes so we can start filming! We decided that the more "home-made" props are the better, considering they will create a more realistic opening. After extensive research, we saw that in no way do sex-traffickers spend money while going through this malicious act. Their whole mindset is to gain profit to any extent, spending money is not an option. That is why we are going to use a broken down van and use duct tape as "name tags." We are also are going to use broken down tattoo machines and an old printer to get the right "cheap-aesthetic."

We got all of the girls photos and are ready to film!

It’s filning time and it’s getting late! We’re going to push through however and get it done. It’s been six hours of filming so far, I never thought it would take this long for a few minutes of film opening! Luckily, we are are all on the same page and want to have the best film opening as possible!

We finished filming and can’t wait to edit!

Nos, we’re starting to edit by watching different videos and websites that have information on how to get the cam recorder effect that we were looking for. Rendering the video is the longest process so far, it’s been taking over 2 hours to render our video and we’re not even done editing! Now after finishing we must render it again to export it, an even longer process. So tgere we were, sitting t Panera for 8 hours, eagerly waiting for the final result of our video to be produced! The time couldn’t go anyyyy slower! We were so excited to see it. When it came out we all jumped to our feet and started cheering, for our video was done.

As soon as we finished, I went straight home and asked my family to come over for a screening of my first film opening! They came over and started watching... my grandma began crying and everyone left with chills! The film opening was a complete success and I couldn’t be any happier! GO US!

Auditory experience

Through this film, we are mostly focused on the visual, more than the auditory experience. We believe that the picture the audience sees on the screen will have a bigger impact on the viewer than the sound. We still, however, would like to incorporate different styles of music and harsh sounds that will engage the audience more within the plot. These include, yet are not limited to, deep strings and eerie music. The music is a bit tricky however because we do want to make the film opening as realistic as possible. Having a non-diegetic sound would affect the viewers credibility with the opening. On the other hand, not having music might bore the audience and have them less focused on the visuals being shown on screen.

For these reasons, we have tried to find the best music possible for this specific opening. One that is not too crazy and unrealistic, however more for one that goes along with the tempo of the film and the overall emotions of it. We found music on this website, which has royalty-free sound, giving us the ability to play it on our own opening without having to pay.  Through this we have found options to the sound we might use. The problem is that since we haven't filmed yet, we continue to find problems putting the right music to the correct scene. Another problem is that the music continues to feel unrealistic for the serious awareness we are trying to raise about sex-trafficking. We have to wait until we can correctly film and edit to choose the correct music.

Problems with casting!

Quick update!

Instead of finding real drama club kids from our school, we decided to find the most real people we could find. These would be those who don't dramatize things, we wanted to someone to feel the eerie and uncomfortable events that sex-trafficking victims feel like in order to get raw emotions and responses from them. For this reason, our friends, with no acting experience will be taking part in this project. We also have Fabiana's younger sister Valeria to play the role of the young girl, as she is only nine and Latina. This gives us the advantage of showing that age is just a number in this monopoly and sadly the ones who are sold the quickest. The age gap would be shown through the other members of the cast such as Sabrina, a 20-year-old, white college student who will be the oldest. The different race also gives audinece members more of a difference when it comes to these two actors.

We wanted all our girls to be different, for this reason, we have selected all races. From African American, White, Latino, to Asian. This will better diversify our cast and create a more authentic peace. The whole point is to create the most realistic opening as possible and this, wituhout a doubt is the way to do it. One question I received from my peers was how we were going to represent the social classes. In this case, once the girls are in the room it will extremely difficult to demonstrate considering they are in the same clothes. For this, the main charayer, who will be played by me, will give off the impression of being in the upper class. This is meant to show that any girl can be affected, no matter the social class. Through small dialogue, this impression will also be delivered.

This is Valeria and Sabrina. It is clearly seen that they are completely opposite, yet in the same position.

Casting!

Actors are an essential part of any film, as they are the ones who bring the idea to life. For our project, we need people who are dramatic. Who's more dramatic then teenagers with raging hormones. Better yet, actual high school drama club teens themselves! When casting, we are looking for the most vulnerable faces, the ones who look innocent to danger. The reason for this is because in the opening we want to show how vulnerable one must become when going through this process. We want to show that the most innocent souls become trapped in the game of monopoly.

The first thing we need to think about is how much we want to diversify the cast. I believe that it is extremely essential that we do this because we want to accurately represent that anyone can be affected by the dangers of sex-trafficking We want to accurately represent that any age, sex, color, race, or religion is open to sex-trafficking. For this reason, we are looking for all races and ages to help us represent this film accurately. It is extremely deceiving if we only place certain ages or a certain race to be sex-traffic because it will not show how it happens in any part of the world to any women.
